The Green Cents Program

The Green Cents Program

is an innovative way to raise funds for the purchase of open space for the benefit of the citizens of Centre County. ClearWater Conservancy is partnering with community-minded local merchants to protect land selected for its natural resources, scenic value, and recreational and educational benefit to the citizens of Centre County.

The Green Cents Program is:

Voluntary

  • The merchant asks the customer if he or she would like to make a voluntary sales contribution at the time of purchase.

  • The sales contribution is not a tax, but a novel way to protect land voluntarily and without government regulation.

Successful

  • Similar programs have successfully raised funds in this manner to protect important land.

  • By providing small individual donations, both merchant and customer are protecting land important to the community's water supply, wildlife, outdoor recreation and education, and scenic beauty.

  • 97 cents of every dollar received goes toward land purchase; only 3 cents of every dollar received goes toward program administrative costs.
